Not Comics: Gore Vidal On Edgar Rice Burroughs And Tarzan

imageAs far as I know, the late essayist Gore Vidal never wrote about comics or cartooning. The artist Steve Lieber mentioned on twitter that Vidal did write an essay on Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan. I think it's worth a scan if you have a moment this morning; it may be worth more than a scan if you're interested in fantastic literature and the roots of the appeal of the superhero comic book. I'm as fascinated by writers that wrote every kind of thing, like Vidal, as I am the progenitors of imaginative pulp writing like Burroughs. From the perspective of the commercialized hegemonies of today, they seem equally unlikely creatures.
