NYC Con Same Weekend as MegaCon

The analysis of the news yesterday that Reed Exhibitions plans to run a comics and related industries focused convention in New York City proved more interesting than the announcement itself, and not just because it led to solid pieces from
Calvin Reid and
Heidi MacDonald.
For one thing,
Matt Brady noted in his story at Newsarama that Orlando's
MegaCon is held that same weekend, which I guess throws the future of that show into some doubt -- or at least calls into question its continued growth. The other interesting thing that leaps out at me is that none of the concerns one might reasonably come up with in a brainstormng session abot a New York City-based convention, except maybe Reed's ability to cover any investment, are really answered by Reed's proposal. I mean, the proposed show is definitely New York in late winter, in a crowded season, at a convention site some locals don't find very accessible, and there are high costs to exhibit -- particularly for out-of-town companies. Yet the confidence Reed displays makes you wonder why no one's attempted a more strategically planned major trade show for New York City before now.
