Random Comics News Story Round-Up

* Ales Kot
writes an open letter to Marvel about their support for SOPA.

* the onslaught of top comics lists continues. Buzz Dixon writes a pair of best comics pieces:
a three-
parter for
Hollywood Jesus, with the bonus of Dixon's outstanding author's photo; also,
one focused on specific comic strips for his own web site. You may know Dixon as
a gag writer for Gojira. (He wrote for Mothra before she became a prop comic.) Tucker Stone
has written a best-10 list for
Flavorwire. The folks at
iFanboy name their publisher of the year -- no love for the Barks/
Pogo close-out to the year Fantagraphics had, which I still think was pretty astonishing, although it may be out of their range of interests.
Here's their list of notable collected editions. Here's
the superhero/mainstream list from
AV Club.
Comic Book Resources has their
list up in five parts.
* reviews of 2011 related to or using comics: Steve Bell on
the events of the year; John Jackson Miller on
20 years of top comics of the year -- a lot of this information is just recently released by Diamond. Here's a more concise list from Miller on
the top comic book from each of the last 20 years.
* Chuck O'Donnell profiles
Andrew Wales. An editor at
Malibu Magazine talks to
KAL. Alex Dueben talks to one of my favorite people in comics,
Moritat.
* if you ever wondered how tough the syndicated newspaper strip gig, and how much readers' comfort with existing features plays a role in decisions that editors make, check out
this savaging of Cul De Sac by California fans of Fred Basset (thanks, James Kochalka).
* Chris Mautner
recommends work by Jessica Abel. Grant Goggans on
Welcome To The Nerd Farm!. Greg McElhatton on
Rust: Visitor In The Field. Alan David Doane on
Fatale #1.
*
here's a nice on-line republication of a P. Craig Russell strip for one of the
Comics Journal anthologies from years ago.
* I can't remember if I ever linked to
this image-stuffed report from Drew Friedman about going to the Brooklyn Comics And Graphics Festival and getting to hang out with/interview Jack Davis. The good thing is that there's absolutely no harm in linking to it again.
*
life imitates Cul De Sac.
* the
Guardian writes about sexism in the comic book industry.
* Brigid Alverson makes the case that Dark Horse Comics should have stuck
with their initially-announced pricing strategy.
* finally, it's my understanding that the Syracuse-based, one-time newspaper columnist about comics
Jeff Kapalka has
passed away. He was most active from the early part of the last decade to about 2009, and wrote for the
Syracuse Herald-Journal. He had admirably broad taste in what he engaged in his column, which isn't always the case with newspapermen. Kapalka would have been in his mid- to late-fifties, I think. All condolences to family and friends.
