Random Comics News Story Round-Up

* the great Paul Gravett
writes an article on UK comics conventions that's helpful in a lot of ways, one of which is simply asking the question about why there are so many damn conventions right now. Seriously, ten years ago comics conventions in North America seemed like they might all die off except San Diego and maybe SPX.

* the historian, artist and author
Craig Yoe lectures on Joe Shuster.
*
Drawn and Quarterly has been profiled in Canadian Business Magazine.
* our pal Jackie Estrada drew my attention
to the passing of Mike Nebeker of the Geek Tragedy podcast. I didn't know the man or his work, and am able to find very little on-line, but as a fellow comics enthusiast taking that next step into reportage our best wishes go to his friends, family and workmates.
*
people are going to link the crap out of this cartoon.
*
Todd Klein on Jerry Robinson as a logo designer.
*
here's some sort of recording from the Mouly/Crumb tour that popped up as an advertisement when I was looking at something not-comics related.
* the
Bone people
have provided a look at the notice they received for having
Rose named a Junior Literary Guild selection.
* the seminar it advertises won't happen until September 2010, but
this cartoon of Greg Stump and Dave Lasky made me chuckle.
* not comics: the newsman, memoirist and mystery writer Dick Stodghill
died over the weekend. He was 84. He's the only guy with whom I ever worked who fought in Europe
and was a Pinkerton operative: he had great stories. The Pinkerton fact just killed me: it was like meeting a character from a failed Peter Bogdanavich movie. Once when he took a vacation I received the gift of his column space four days in a row. As vividly as I remember that opportunity I think it's safe to say it had something to do with what I'm doing now. Thank you, Mr. Stodghill.
* I think I'm going to like the Synergy Age Of Comics, but only if it means we get to see
a lot of stupid-sounding movie adaptations with no real underlying reason as to their approach except that they seem to be following someone's whim.
* finally, Mark Evanier
has written an appreciation of Shel Dorf for one of the
LA Times-related blogs.
