Random Comics News Story Round-Up
*
can you help these fine gentleman find Al Kaufman?
*
in today's must-read piece of criticism, Jog asks "What was manga?"/"What was
Manga?"
* the critic and cultural historian Jeet Heer
draws a line between 19th Century Irish-American stereotypes and Homer Simpson.
* the cartoonist Steve Greenberg
reflects on a year since being laid off. Troy Brownfield
reflects on a year of "new voices" at
Newsarama's reconfigured blog.
* not comics: it was weird during
the GI Joe movie where the action settled in on Paris and for the entire sequence set in the City Of Lights the GI Joe people functioned as the over-equipped, casually destructive bad guys in pursuit of the Cobra people, who were generally resourceful, plucky, confident, funny and heroically successful against major odds in achieving most of their goals. Seriously, if I had walked in the room just for that 15 minutes I would have been
really confused.
* a fund
has been created for the daughter of comics podcast enthusiast Eric Martin. I hope you'll consider participation.
*
this post by Kurt Busiek on what's happened to the
Astro City hardcover may not be for everyone, but for close watchers of publishing particulars it's a good one, particularly in how strategies shifted for the books as the publisher went through changes. Speaking of Busiek, he's also posted every Marvel character he's created. This is an interesting list in that Mr. Busiek is probably better known for his own creations than any of those Marvel creations.
* not comics: I hate to tell Brian Fies, but
answering questions that make your head explode with 10,000 aneurysms is
perfect preparation for graduate school.
* finally,
this is adorable. And so is
this.
