Random Comics News Story Round-Up
* I'm not sure how visible these things are -- if they're set for public viewing or only for those that have liked the appropriate pages -- but it looks like Steve Rude is building
an image set of the Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy characters that draws on various '60s iconography.
* Steve Lafler
has written a nice reminiscence of the late publisher and cartoonist Dylan Williams, talking about the elements of his career and outlook that struck him during their encounters.
* Alex Woodward on
Oil And Water. Paul Constant on
a bunch of newer books. James Romberger on
Setting The Standard. Santiago Garcia on
The Man Who Grew His Beard. Todd Klein on
Hugo. Sean Gaffney on
Pogo: The Complete Syndicated Strips Vol. 1 and
Lost In The Andes. Greg McElhatton on
Generation Hope #13. Johanna Draper Carlson on
Professor Munkata's British Museum Adventure,
MetaMaus and
The Manga Guide To Biochemistry. J. Caleb Mozzocco on
a bunch of new comic books and
Astonishing X-Men Vol. 5.
* missed it: Dan Clowes
covers The New Yorker.
*
Tony Millionaire, guidance counselor.
* I'm trying harder not to allow this site to run a lot of links to straight-up reprints of stories without a) having a good reason to believe they're public domain or b) see that they're presented in a way that satisfies use of that material in a context where the material illustrates a point (and I don't think this is understood just by reprinting the stories, which some sites claim) rather than
is the point. It's a wobbly line, though, and one that I'm unable to figure out half of the time, my biggest difficulty being that there are some artists where just having good scans of a certain period of work seems like a historical contribution where just running a story one likes really doesn't. I'll continue to struggle with it.
This Dr. Strange story drawn by Dave Gibbons lives mostly on the "I just published a copyrighted story because I can" side of things, but seeing someone like Gibbons draw that under-utilized character in such a handsome, classic, heroic fashion seemed almost -- yet not quite -- enough context for me to run a go, look link.
* I'm a huge fan of final episodes, and Allan Holtz provides
a pair for Captain Vincible.
* Laura Sneddon talks to
Alan Moore. Robin McConnell talks to
Geof Darrow. That Darrow interview is a monster.
* finally, before I forget, here are solid gift guides from
Katherine Dacey and
Jim Rugg.
