Random Comics News Story Round-Up

* Sandra and John of Metaphrog have penned a nice "year in the life" post for the FPI blog. Speaking of that site, they've begun their Best Of 2011 recurring feature, which I think is a nicely executed one and can be bookmarked here.

image* not comics: it's never too early for Hobbit fan art.

* speaking of things definitely not fan art, not comics but all Tolkien: I had no idea the last couple of official calendars featured paintings by Cor Blok. This would have freaked me out when I was a little kid and wanted my Tolkien art all "realistic" and, as I recall, slightly orange, but those are some pretty cool images if you're in a mall shop somewhere and get the chance to take a peek. Here's an interview about the 2011 edition.

* Richard Bruton on The Escapologist #2 and Blood Blokes #1. Adrian Kinnaird on The Art Of The Adventures Of Tintin. Sean T. Collins on Danger Country #1. Douglas Wolk and David Brothers on Judge Death: The Life And Death Of.... David Brothers and Alyssa Rosenberg on America. Sean Gaffney on Wonder! Vol. 1 and The Wallflower Vol. 27. Don MacPherson on Daredevil #6. Grant Goggans on Cardboard Heroes. Greg McElhatton on Nina In That Makes Me Mad. Alan David Doane on Dark Horse's watermark. KC Carlson on The Stan Lee Universe. Charles Yoakum on Parker: The Martini Edition.

* that is indeed one lovely classic Dan Dare Christmas cover. And this is indeed one cool-looking Adrian Tomine effort.

* Johanna Draper Carlson uses the springboard of Top Shelf's recent digital comics announcements to pursue a question about reader preference. I would imagine that the answers are along the lines of "nobody really knows yet" and "it's not all that difficult to do multiple avenues," but I'm working out of my depth on that stuff.

* Gerry Alanguilan discusses the nature of collaboration. Derek Kirk Kim addresses rejection.

* here's a few posts I missed and only caught up to now: what one can learn from drawing a page of King-Cat, James Vance points out that comics with corporate support shouldn't have typos just from the sheer number of hands placed on them, Kurt Busiek does a short interview in support of Marvels being taught in class, Pat Lewis re-did his web site, Jeff Parker is looking for advice on how to change his, Shannon Smith kneecaps the New 52 and Pizza Island added a new member.

* congratulations to Nate Powell and his wife Rachel.

* Brian Hibbs would like to foster some discussion about digital.

* no one in comics gives better interviews on a consistent basis the way Renee French does. Dan Vado talks to Karl Stephan.

* finally, David Brothers takes a look at comedy in comics.
