Random Comics News Story Round-Up

* despite the new, potentially censorious Tokyo laws,
Comiket is staying put.
Here's a guide to the bill.
* the only time I'm ever surprised
when someone posts something about piracy is when the piracy is somehow new.

* Domingos Isabelinho on Mat Brinkman
would pretty much have to be good, right?
* unearthed a trio of bookmarked posts on the story from weeks ago that the writer J. Michael Straczysnki was leaving high-profile serial comics gigs on the Wonder Woman and Superman characters:
J. Caleb Mozzocco,
Brian Hibbs,
Straczynski himself,
Warren Ellis. At one point I thought the Ellis piece worth responding to, but I guess I talked myself out of it. I agree with Ellis' argument that we should celebrate creators doing what they want, when they want. As someone once pointed out on Seattle sports radio's "Mitch In The Morning" when a prominent basketball player was holding out, none of these contracts are slavery: you're allowed to not perform a job if you don't want to; you just don't get the reward. That's a great, just, beautiful thing and makes for better art in the long run by a factor of about 10 billion. On the other hand, I think taking a look at the wiping out of a big-time creative hire -- pushed as such by DC -- is a justified endeavor by those who cover that field, not a waste of time, and the curious language of the release vis-a-vis the future of comics was worth noting as well. I know it always sounds like people beat these things to death if you read all of the pieces on a subject like that, but most people don't read all of the pieces.
* Dave Ferraro
picks his 10 favorite manga from 2010. Derik A Badman
picks his 10 favorite webcomics.
These are the comics that Douglas Wolk looks forward to seeing in 2011.
This is the nicest year-end evaluation I've ever seen.
*
Pablo S. Gomez, 1931-2010.
*
I had not realized that the secret origin of the new Batwoman tied into DADT. I'm also not sure I knew there was
a Canadian comics best-sellers list, although I've probably linked to it a half-dozen times.
* Eric Reynolds talks about
MOME in two parts:
one,
two.
*
here's a best of small press and mini-comics post at Poopsheet. I can't imagine trying to cover those comics comprehensive fashion and god bless those brave few that do.
*
Matt Seneca names his not a top 10 list from 2010. Derik A Badman
names the best 10 print comics.
* a couple of not comics:
this thing is just getting hammered; it's already starting to alter reputations. Drew Friedman's Facebook account is like the greatest generator of
desktop background images ever.
* finally, I haven't been doing a ton of links to interviews during the holiday season, but here's a good one:
Chris Mautner interviews Lynda Barry.
