The BBC
reports that a Somali man shot by police on Friday outside cartoonist Kurt Westergaard's home in Aarhus has been charged with an attempt to kill Westergaard. The suspect pled innocent. Police say he was shot while breaking into the home armed with an axe and a knife, that he had been under surveillance, and that he has has ties with radical groups in Somalia. Westergaard was home at the time of the break in and locked himself into a safe room. The man was unable to breach that secure door. Westergaard, the most outspoken of the dozen cartoonist who provided cartoon depictions of Muhammad in a newspaper article that in early 2006 steamrolled into a political controversy where over 100 people died in protests, was with his five-year-old granddaughter at the time the man entered his home.
The man's name has not been a provided to the press. The BBC reporter in Copenhagen said he had bandages on his arm and leg when wheeled into court on a stretcher.
