Steve Greenberg: Staffed Editorial Cartoonist Positions At Newspapers Down 34 Percent Since 2008

imageSteve Greenberg takes the recent news of Drew Sheneman's taking the Star-Ledger buyout and some numbers from the Association of American Editorial Cartoonist to suggest that staffed cartoonist positions of the kind represented by Sheneman and the recently let-go Pulitzer Prize winner Matt Davies are down 34 percent since the current woes facing the newspaper industry churned into overdrive in 2008.

This is of course distressing news by any measure, made even more so given that the recent rash of employment changes indicates the bottom was not reached earlier in 2010 as some had asserted. I'll leave you to read Greenberg's long and lacerating article rather than comment further in a way that replicates what he's saying. I'm guessing there are more living Heisman Trophy winners than paid staffed cartoonists right now, and about five times as many astronauts.
