This Isn’t A Library: New, Notable Releases Into Comics’ Direct Market

Here are the books that make an impression on me staring at this week's no-doubt largely accurate list of books shipping from Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. to comic book and hobby shops across North America.

I might not buy all of the works listed here. I might not buy any. You never know. I'd sure look at the following, though.

*****

MAR171733 BOUNDLESS GN (MR) $24.95
This is a solid-looking week at the comics shop. Up top is the latest from Jillian Tamaki, collecting short stories she's done for Hazlitt and that intriguing Frontier issue she did. I think Jillian Tamaki is the cartoonist of right now, so everything she does is of interest to me.

image MAR170691 PAKLIS #1 (MR) $5.99
MAR170092 LOBSTER JOHNSON PIRATES GHOST #3 $3.99
MAR170759 KILL OR BE KILLED #9 (MR) $3.99
FEB170663 MONSTRESS #12 (MR) $3.99
MAR170778 SEX CRIMINALS #19 (MR) $3.99
MAR170915 SECRET EMPIRE #3 (OF 10) $3.99
These are the comic-book comics. I'm interested in Paklis because Dustin Weaver is a good artist who could work forever on other people's property, so it will be interesting to see what got him interested in this specific concept. Hey, there's a Mignola and a Brubaker/Phillips, making the the "reliable creators" section. Those Kill Or Be Killed pages seem to my eyes as good as anything Phillips has done. And funny, too, some definitely funny visual jokes. Monstress seems to remain a high-seller for those kinds of companys.

MAY160684 BITCH PLANET TP VOL 02 PRESIDENT BITCH (MR) $14.99
DEC160811 LAZARUS TP VOL 05 (MR) $14.99
JAN170138 MISTER X ARCHIVES TP $24.99
Three solid genre works I will one day have at my home. The Kelly Sue DeConnick/Valentine De Landro series kind of shifts into the lovely "we've got time" gear common to such titles. I think that's a speed and pace here now that will greatly serve this story. I enjoy the Rucka/Lark adventure, series kind of a grocery store paperback written by the Occupy movement. And Mister X is still an interesting comic at its lunch some multiple decades removed. I still have my original comics, but I couldn't tell you what format is best.

JAN170546 LENNON THE NEW YORK YEARS HC $19.99
MAR171387 REVENGER AND THE FOG GN $18.95
APR172259 100 THINGS SPIDER-MAN FANS SHOULD KNOW DO BEFORE THEY DIE SC $14.95
More: a translated graphic novel focusing on one of the Beetles -- one of the btter ones. The Revenger book is another attempt by that lovely man Chuck Forsman to capture the energy of young-person storytelling. The last one is a novelty book that just made me laugh by existing. So may snappy comebacks.

APR171365 CANOPY GN (MR) $15.00
This is a great mystery to me, but it's so very attractive that I want to owe more.

The full list of this week's releases, including some titles with multiple cover variations and a long, impressive list of toys and other stuff that isn't comics, can be found here. Despite this official list there's no guarantee a comic will show up in the stores as promised, or in all of the stores as opposed to just a few. Also, stores choose what they carry and don't carry so your shop may not carry a specific publication. There are a lot of comics out there.

To find your local comic book store, check this list; and for one I can personally recommend because I've shopped there, albeit a while back, try this.

The above titles are listed with their Diamond order code in the first field, which may assist you in finding comics at your shop or having them order something for you they don't have in-stock. Ordering through a direct market shop can be a frustrating experience, so if you have a direct line to something -- you know another shop has it, you know a bookstore has it -- I'd urge you to consider all of your options.

If I failed to list your comic, that's because I hate you.
