This Week Marks 25 Years Of Bob Wayne At DC

Joe Field sent a note to Heidi MacDonald and myself last night saying that today marks Bob Wayne's 25th Anniversary at DC Comics. The official biographical information that DC puts out there says August 3, but we're definitely in the right ballpark and a little early shipping never hurt anyone.

imageIt seems appropriate that such a note would come from an established retailer like Field: Wayne has been a great friend to Direct Market retail in his quarter-century at that company, and has done as much as anyone in terms of building the system of comics sales we have now through his efforts there. I believe he is currently DC's Senior Vice President, Sales; he became a vice president at the company in the late 1990s; his first position was retail promotions manager. Wayne was a product of Texas comics retail. The system that Wayne has helped build is one that definitely gets criticized, and I think often rightly so, but you could see last Fall with DC's New 52 initiative how much a lot of Wayne's work over the years came into play when executing that ambitious sales strategy, a stunt that could have gone the other direction in a hurry. In an era where an entire adult lifetime spent working in comics seems increasingly unlikely, Wayne's tenure and continued influence is well worth noting. He remains popular with the retailers, winning the ComicsPro Industry Appreciation Award in February. I hope he has a nice next few days looking back.

Hey, here's Field and Wayne at a retailer's meeting in 2011.
