Time’s Other Best Of Cartooning List

image

A few comics fans reading the derision facing Time.com's Techland blog "best of the '00s" feature on comics may have been reminded of similar accusations concerning a lack of rigor and the spotlight on a limited range of works that tends to great the magazine's list of editorial cartoons. While I like the gag in the one above and feel it was appropriately silly, it's followed immediately by a pretty C-minus cartoon from the same, generally excellent cartoonist. I imagine most people will have a hard time endorsing the list as a snapshot of anything but very, very traditional editorial cartoon making, which is pretty silly in this day and age. Time's choices are:

1. "Save the Women and Children... and My Bonus Too," Jimmy Margulies, The New Jersey Record
2. "The Watchful Eye of Twitter," Walt Handelsman, Newsday
3. "'Now Stand Aside, Worthy -- Aw, Just Get Outta the Way'," RJ Matson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
4. "Downsizing in Detroit," RJ Matson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
5. "'We Only Provided a Target'," Clay Bennett, Chattanooga Times Free Press
6. "Eight Was Enough," Mike Luckovich, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
7. "'Now This Is It'," Mike Luckovich, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
8. "Auditioning for the Supremes," Stuart Carlson, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
9. "Public Option No. 1," Mike Smith, Las Vegas Sun
10. "The Boy in the Fiscal Bubble," Bruce Plante, Tulsa World
