WonderCon Launches 2008 Con Season

imageTomorrow marks the beginning of the three-day WonderCon show, the first major US comics convention (the Europeans are kind of set up like Nascar, with January's Angouleme Festival as the Daytona 500) of the year. Because of its position on the calendar and the growing relationship that the show's organizer has enjoyed with Hollywood studios one guesses in part because of their experience with San Diego's big summer show, WonderCon is probably set up as well as any show to drive advance buzz for various summer movies and final runs on this season of various television shows than other conventions. It's also a smaller, more moderate show in terms of getting out and meeting the various comics-related folks on hand, including a lot of creators on the West Coast and drawing from the Bay Area's rich local scene.

One trend to watch for is certain comics entities and creators targeting shows of this size rather than the shows in San Diego and even New York because of the relatively reduced cost and lighter competition for eyeballs.

Here's a preview with recommended panels at io9. Debbie Huey shares her own set of convention tips in this profile. Here's a preview of events and exhibitors of potential special interest to gay attendees. This preview at Wired includes a few events and offerings from the area's rich retailing landscape. Don't forget the official PR that went out a while back.
