A number of titles and cartoonists familiar to English-language comics audienceshave been nominated to The Essentials list of the Angouleme Festival. The yearly celebration of international comics through the lens of the French-language industry starts late next month in the French town from which it derives its more popular, colloquial name. Bart Beaty covered changes in the awards program announced at the official festival press conference last week. This step, a kind of honor roll that reaches across the industry and into various worldwide traditions via translation, remains much the same as it has the last few years.

Among those cartoonists and/or works with which North American fans may be familiar with either already or soon include but are not limited to Hannah Berry (Britten and Brulightly), Daniel Clowes (Eightball), Seth (George Sprott), Joe Daly (his forthcoming Dungeon Quest), R. Crumb (Genesis), Emmanuel Guibert (an Alan's War collection maybe?), Ivan Brunetti (Misery Loves Comedy), Michel Rabagliati (a sixth Paul book) and the team of Mike Konopacki and Howard Zinn (A People's History Of American Empire). Throw in various European comics heavy-hitters from names of selective familiarity and a smattering of manga and you have the usual strong list -- at least at first glance.
