Your Danish Cartoons Hangover Update

* the Netherlands Utrecht District Court early today acquitted members of a group called the Arab European League of the hate speech charges facing them for a cartoon suggesting the Holocaust never happened. The cartoon was made in response to the Danish caricatures of Muhammad that ran in Jyllands-Posten. The original decision can be found here.

* the Danish Muhammad cartoonist Kurt Westergaard is thinking about retiring. He has been on leave since November 2009, and plans to discuss his future with his editors on June 1.

* not comics: a recent South Park cartoon that depicted Muhammad and was based on another episode depicting Muhammad that was about the Danish Cartoons Controversy has led to threats and at least one person, probably more, shrieking and running around Comedy Central headquarters slapping hands in the hopes of keeping anything related to Muhammad from that show to be streamed on-line or re-run. The South Park guys are satirists; doing satire is their business. If you wish to avoid their satire, it's easily done, and you're not being kept from anything other than additional satire. Keeping them from doing what they do seems extra, extra stupid to me. You can read a fine commentary here about the issue from a general political/cultural standpoint.
